History of CGO Media - SEO, GEO & AI Search Experts Since 2000

CGO Media has been involved in search, digital visibility and online growth since the earliest years of commercial search optimisation.

What began as practical work helping businesses become easier to find online has developed over more than 26 years into a broader search and discovery discipline covering technical SEO, content authority, digital PR, entity understanding, local search, ecommerce visibility, AI Search and Generative Engine Optimisation.

The history of CGO Media is therefore closely connected to the history of search itself. Search engines have changed, user behaviour has changed, technologies have changed and the systems used to discover, evaluate and recommend organisations have become increasingly sophisticated.

Throughout that evolution, the objective has remained broadly the same: help organisations become visible, understandable, trusted and commercially effective wherever people search for information, products, services or providers.

Before CGO Media: The Early Search Environment

The foundations of CGO Media were established during the 1990s, when websites were becoming an increasingly important commercial asset and search engines were still relatively simple compared with the systems used today.

Early search optimisation was highly technical and often rudimentary. Website structure, page titles, keyword usage, directory inclusion, links and basic HTML optimisation could have a significant influence on visibility.

There were no AI-generated answers, sophisticated local search ecosystems, semantic knowledge systems or large-scale recommendation engines. Search was predominantly a process of matching queries with indexed web pages.

Even at this early stage, however, one principle was becoming clear: businesses that could structure their information effectively and make themselves easier for search engines to understand could gain a meaningful commercial advantage.

2000

The Beginning of CGO Media

CGO Media was established in 2000, at a point when search engines were beginning to become one of the most important gateways to information on the web.

Google was still a relatively young company. Search engine optimisation had not yet developed into the mature international industry that exists today, and many organisations had little understanding of how search visibility could influence commercial performance.

CGO Media’s early work focused on practical search optimisation: improving website structure, increasing visibility, generating enquiries and helping businesses use the internet as a measurable source of commercial growth.

From the beginning, the emphasis was not simply on rankings. Visibility only had value if it contributed to enquiries, customers, transactions or other meaningful business outcomes.

2000–2005

The Early Google Era

During the early 2000s, Google rapidly became the dominant influence on search behaviour.

Search optimisation during this period was shaped heavily by keywords, links, PageRank, directories, technical accessibility and relatively simple signals of relevance and authority.

Businesses began to understand that search visibility could generate significant numbers of leads and sales. SEO moved from being an experimental website activity toward becoming an increasingly important part of digital marketing strategy.

CGO Media developed alongside this change, working directly with businesses to improve rankings, traffic and commercial performance while adapting continuously to search engine developments.

2006–2010

Search Becomes a Professional Discipline

By the second half of the 2000s, search marketing was becoming considerably more sophisticated.

Analytics improved. Conversion measurement became more important. Content strategies became more structured and businesses increasingly expected search investment to demonstrate measurable commercial returns.

SEO was no longer simply a matter of altering individual pages. Technical architecture, information structure, links, content, user behaviour and commercial intent were becoming increasingly interconnected.

CGO Media’s work during this period increasingly focused on understanding the complete journey between visibility and business performance.

2011–2015

Search Quality Changes the Industry

The early 2010s represented one of the most significant periods of change in the history of SEO.

Major search quality developments reduced the effectiveness of many simplistic optimisation techniques. Thin content, manipulative link practices and low-quality publishing became increasingly difficult to sustain.

At the same time, mobile search, local discovery, structured information and stronger content quality signals became increasingly important.

CGO Media continued to adapt around that principle, placing greater emphasis on technical quality, genuine authority, relevant content and sustainable commercial visibility.

2016–2019

Intent, Entities and Authority

Search engines increasingly moved beyond simple keyword matching.

Understanding intent, relationships between topics, organisations, locations, products, people and other entities became increasingly important.

Search visibility was becoming dependent on much more than the content of a single page. Brand authority, structured data, external references, reputation, content depth and contextual relationships all contributed to how organisations were understood.

For CGO Media, this period reinforced an important shift: successful search strategy increasingly required organisations to build coherent digital authority rather than optimise isolated pages.

2020–2022

Search Becomes an Ecosystem

By the beginning of the 2020s, search visibility had become part of a much wider digital discovery environment.

Websites remained important, but they existed alongside Google Business Profiles, maps, review platforms, publishers, directories, social platforms, ecommerce marketplaces, industry sources and increasingly sophisticated knowledge systems.

Search authority was no longer created in one place.

Organisations needed accurate information, technical reliability, external validation, strong content, consistent entity signals and evidence of real-world credibility across multiple digital environments.

2023–2025

Generative AI Changes Discovery

The emergence of generative AI introduced another fundamental change.

Systems such as ChatGPT, AI-powered search experiences and generative answers began to alter how users discovered and evaluated information.

Traditional search results were no longer the only route between a question and an answer. AI systems could summarise information, compare providers, identify sources, recommend options and construct responses using information gathered from multiple parts of the web.

How does an organisation become sufficiently clear, authoritative and trusted to be selected as a source, citation or recommendation by an AI system?

CGO Media began expanding its work beyond traditional SEO into Generative Engine Optimisation, AI Search visibility, entity authority, citation authority, source selection and recommendation readiness.

2026

CGO Media Today

Today, CGO Media operates across traditional search, AI Search and emerging intelligent discovery environments.

SEO remains an important part of that work, but search visibility is now treated as a broader organisational capability involving technology, content, entities, authority, reputation, external validation and increasingly AI-mediated discovery.

More than 26 years of practical work has also contributed to the development of CGO Media’s research programme.

The CGO Media Research Library, Framework Library, Research Architecture, Statistics Library and supporting sector research are designed to examine how search and discovery systems are changing and to convert those observations into practical models organisations can use.

From Practice to Research

CGO Media’s research programme did not begin as an academic exercise separate from commercial search work.

It developed from recurring questions encountered across many years of practical search strategy.

Why do some organisations develop stronger search authority than others?

Why are particular sources selected and cited by search engines and AI systems?

How do entity clarity, external validation, content authority and technical accessibility interact?

What makes one provider more likely than another to be surfaced, trusted or recommended?

These questions led to a more formal research structure covering AI source selection, citation authority, recommendation authority, entity understanding, technical SEO, content authority and sector-specific search systems.

The objective is not to replace practical search work with theory. It is to develop better models for understanding increasingly complex discovery systems.

The Next Era of Search

Search is continuing to evolve.

AI assistants, generative search systems, recommendation engines and increasingly autonomous agents are changing how information is gathered and how decisions are made.

In this environment, organisations will increasingly need to be understood not only by traditional search engines, but by systems capable of interpreting entities, comparing evidence, evaluating authority and selecting sources on behalf of users.

The terminology may continue to change. SEO, GEO, AI Search optimisation and related disciplines will develop as the underlying technology evolves.

The fundamental requirement is more durable.

Organisations need to make themselves easy to discover, easy to understand, well supported by evidence and sufficiently trusted to be selected.

That principle has shaped CGO Media since the earliest years of search and continues to guide its work today.
